Looking for an alternative to the Leister power groover? The Crain 968 Type 2 prepares flooring seams for heat welding at less than half the purchase cost of either the Leister or WOLFF within the ranges shown above. It includes a carbide grooving blade and carrying case.

The Crain's floor-following wheel raises or lowers the blade as the floor surface changes, compensating for up to 1/8 inch of variation over one foot of seamline. This helps maintain consistent groove depth across uneven surfaces.

How Blade RPM Affects Heat at the Seam

Blade RPM affects cutting speed and heat at the cut. Feed rate, blade condition, groove depth, and flooring material also influence whether the seam edges soften or melt. A sharp blade and suitable operating settings matter on every machine.

Crain runs at a fixed 12,000 RPM. Leister offers two settings at 14,500 and 18,500 RPM, while WOLFF provides a variable 6,000–10,000 RPM range. Adjustable speed gives the operator another way to match the cutting action to the material; RPM alone does not determine the finished groove quality.

Compare groove shape, width, and depth as well as machine price. The included Crain and Leister blades cut trapezoidal grooves, while the included WOLFF disc cuts a semicircular groove. Follow the flooring manufacturer's seam preparation requirements when selecting a blade and setting cutting depth.
